Described by The Huffington Post as “the most exciting literary movement in London” and by Sarah Waters as “always entertaining, always inspiring - a guaranteed good night out”, Polari won Best Cultural Event in the 2013 Co-op Respect Awards.
Tonight’s special event local poet Iain Morrison, Aberdeen’s Shane Strachen, visiting “poet of the south London people” Barbara Brownskirt and 2018 Polari Prize winner Fiona Mozley reading from her new novel Hot Stew.
Founded and hosted by award-winning author Paul Burston, Polari LGBTQ+ literary salon began in 2007 in the upstairs room of a bar in Soho. Since 2009, the salon has been based at London’s Southbank Centre. Since 2014, Polari has also toured extensively, supported by Arts Council England.
A live platform for emerging and established LGBTQ+ literary talent, the salon also awards two annual book prizes. Founded in 2011, The Polari First Book Prize is for a debut book which explores the LGBTQ+ experience. Added in 2019, The Polari Prize is for a non-debut book. Past winners have included poets John McCullough and Andrew McMillan and authors Amrou Al-Kadhi, Saleem Haddad, Mari Hannah, Fiona Mozley and Diriye Osman.
The tour kicked off at Huddersfield Literature Festival and will end in October 2021with a special event at London’s Southbank Centre, when this year’s Prize winners will be announced as part of the London Literature Festival. The tour will also include events in Birmingham, Bradford, Canterbury, Edinburgh, Newcastle, York and at London’s legendary nightclub Heaven and gay sauna Sweatbox Soho.
The UK’s only book awards for LGBTQ+ writing, the prizes are proudly supported by FMcM Associates and DHH Literary Agency. This year’s winner will be announced on October 30 at the London Literature Festival.
